I have honestly never seen one of those. are they heavy, to weigh down the LP or how do they work?

Yes, the clamp is mass-loaded. The wood is quite dense and the clamp weighs in at just over 8.5 oz which feels unexpectedly heavy in the hand. The NC Artist is designed to be used with a clamp and the top of the platter is ever-so-slightly concave so when applied the clamp causes contact between the record and platter all the way to the edge, even if the disc is slightly warped.
The choice of Mpingo wood was inspired by Shun Mook who make a commercial clamp out of this material (see here) which costs, ahem, $2800 and allegedly possesses special properties. From their site:
Quote: The vibration generated by the diamond stylus in the vinyl groove besides inducing an electroflux through the phono-cartridge also excites the ebony molecules, causing it to resonate. This in turn is feed back through the stylus and is reproduced as expanded sound staging, enhanced separation, sharpened focus and enriched tonal balance of the music. Due to the rareness of this timber, there is no doubt that it will become a collector item in the future. |
