The more I record Attention Screen, the more in awe I become of their musicianship. The ABC No Rio gig was the fifth of theirs that I have recorded, and in some ways was the best (though the music was considerably more "out there" than the Merkin Hall CD). Pianist Bob Reina (playing here a touch-sensitive Yamaha MIDI keyboard into a Kurzweil sample box) has extraordinary "width," able to summon up genres at the drop of a eighth note, while drummer Mark Flynn is simply the most imaginative I have encountered. A trio gig I played in Queens 18 months ago with Bob and Mark remains a highlight of my own musicmaking.
